The Unspeaking Center

She who reconciles the ill-matched threads
of her life, and weaves them gratefully
into a single cloth –
it’s she who drives the loudmouths from the hall
and clears it for a different celebration

where the one guest is you.
In the softness of evening
it’s you she receives.

You are the partner of her loneliness,
the unspeaking center of her monologues.
With each disclosure you encompass more
and she stretches beyond what limits her,
to hold you.

The Book of Hours I, 17
Rainer Maria Rilke

Thanks to my close friend, Suzi, a fellow bibliophile whose love for Rilke inspired me to discover his poetry for myself.

  1. you’re welcome, Ang! this is one of my very favorite from The Book of Hours. in fact, since i lent mine to someone {in 2006!} and didn’t get it back, i’ve had to recently reorder it. now that i see you’ve quoted the absolutely perfect book, i cannot wait until it arrives!
